Omnium Gatherum – Origin

After finding myself returning to this album frequently since it was released a few weeks back, I just had to write a review.

Fans of Omnium Gatherum will instantly recognize their sound from the get go and it’s safe to say this albums gives you just what you expect from the melodic death veterans.  Which certainly isn’t a bad thing in this case by any means. IMO Origin is somewhat of an improvement from their previous effort The Burning Cold, which wasn’t bad, it just needed some more spark, I guess. 

Here Emergence sets the atmosphere of the album right off the start with its keyboard intro followed shortly by the classic OG guitar melodies. Prime follows as a great show opener after the intro. Jukkas vocals sound as good as ever here and they contrast guitar melodies beautifully. This is showcased throughout the whole album obviously. Some of the tracks feature clean vocals as well. I think they used them more on this album, but they’re not overdone and they fit in the songs naturally, like in the first single from the album Paragon or Friction and Unity.

Also worth mentioning is the song Reckoning. It has such a cool ‘80s synth vibe rockin’ riffs that shift to double drum attack on verse. The song also has a catchy chorus and a constant tempo change gives it a nice dynamic and fresh feel to their overall sound. And of course what is a song without a guitar solo. Believe me there are plenty of those on the album as well, if the constant melodies are not enough for you.

Origin also contains some Beyond album vibes as well, namely in the song Fortitude.  The melodies from the beginning of the song instantly remind me of that era of the band. And to end this on epic level, Solemn closes the album with just under 9 minute mark. Riff after riff cultivated with melodies throughout the song until the very end.

Overall it’s a stellar record in their already impressive discography, and is also high in the ranks for album of the year in my book. Fans of the band will surely love the album and I think the album will help the band reach even more people. If Origin was the beginning of the band, it would be a great way to start here.
